Who is Mirabai Chanu?
Mirabai Chanu Childhood
Mirabai Chanu is from Nongpok Kakching, a village 45 km south of Manipur’s capital Imphal. As a child, she displayed great strength. She used to lift and carry heavy firewood from the jungle, a lot more than her siblings could.
Dream - Archery to Weightlifting
Mirabai wanted to be an archer. At the age of 12, she had gone to the Khuman Lampak Stadium in Manipur’s capital Imphal to enroll herself in archery. But the archery center was closed and she stepped into the nearby weightlifting marina to enquire about archery.
The thought of weightlifter first crossed her mind when she read about the iconic weightlifter Kunjarani Devi. Her mother who knew of her child’s talent agreed and enrolled her in the weightlifting sport. Mirabai’s dream as a weightlifter began.
She worked hard at this young age to adjust her training to her school schedule. She had to reach the training center every day at 6 00 a.m. As she grew up, She spent years away from home struggling with limited resources to fulfill her dreams.
In spite of all her difficulties, her strong willpower and passion made her get closer to her dreams.
Heartbreak and Battle With Depression
Mirabai was heartbroken after missing out on the Rio games. The failure almost became too much to take for the weightlifter who was just 21 years old. She struggled with injuries and post-Rio, She was depressed and thought about quitting the sport.
After The Strong Come back of Mirabai Chanu
After the setback a Rio, Mirabai realized she had a lot to improve and started to focus on her training again. She was passionate to achieve her dream of winning an Olympic medal. She visited her home in just five days in five years. Her hard work and determination gave her a comeback after the disappointment she faced at the Rio games. her perseverance led to a much stronger comeback and there was no looking back after that.
The Rise of Mirabai Chanu
At the age of 26, Mirabai scripted history by winning the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She became the first Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic silver medal. She is the second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting since Karnam Malleswari’s bronze in the Sydney games in 2000.
Great Gesture of Gratitude
Mirabai had to take numerous lifts from the truck drivers for her daily commute from her home in a tiny village to her training academy in Imphal nearly 25 kilometers away. She could not afford private transportation to the academy every day. So she relied on those sand-carrying truckers who traveled on the same route. Mirabai wanted to meet those truckers to express her heartfelt gratitude and see their blessing.
- Mirabai broke down in tears when she met them. She treated around 150 truck drivers and their helpers to a full course lunch and gave them all a shirt and a Manipuri scarf.
- Her humility and her great gesture of gratitude for not forgetting those who helped her during her hard times win and inspire millions of hearts.

New Commonwealth Games Record
Mirabai Chanu lived up to the expectations of billions of fans as she won the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The star weightlifter topped the podium in the women’s 49kg event. Chanu was the defending Commonwealth Games champion and she defended her title in style as she lifted 29kg more than the silver medalist.
The 27-year-old weightlifter from Manipur lifted a total of 201 kg (88 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean & jerk) to create a CWG record which also happens to be her personal best.
